About Us

The Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) was established by a 2002 Act of Parliament under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry (MTTI) as a government parastatal mandated to engage in activities that will result in Uganda’s rapid industrialization.
In order to fulfill this mandate, UIRI’s core activities focus on identifying affordable technologies and applied research, Business Incubation, Analytical laboratory services, business advisory ,prototyping, industrial engineering design and development to result in the creation of new products and value-addition to local ones.

The Institutes principal goal is to serve as a lead agency in Industrialization of Uganda.

In pursuit of this goal, UIRI works to achieve the following four strategic objectives:

  • To undertake applied industrial research for the development of optimal production processes, for Uganda’s nascent industry;
  • To develop and/or acquire appropriate technology, in order to create a strong, effective and competitive industrial sector.
  • Act as a bridge between academia, government, and the private sector with respect to commercialization of innovation and development initiatives,
  • To promote and encourage the use of good manufacturing practices in industry.

The Institute’s core objectives are handled by the Product Development, Processing Systems and Technology Development Centre directorates or departments.
